What Do I Need to Teach in a Prison? 

A DBS Check is required to work in a prison. The following checks may be needed, depending on the role: 

  • Enhanced DBS Check without a barred list check 
  • Enhanced DBS Check with a children’s barred list check 
  • Enhanced DBS Check with an adult’s barred list check

Various personal skills and qualifications are required for the different roles within prisons available. As a general overview, communication skills are key. This aligns with coaching and mentoring skills, as well as leadership skills. 

Having previous experience in an educational setting is sometimes required, with certain specific qualifications sometimes necessary. All teaching roles within offender learning must have obtained a Level 3 teaching qualification, with Level 2 Maths and English qualifications, and ideally a Level 5 Certificate of Education or PGCE.
